Screenwriting is writing for a visual medium, a medium that is far more powerful than the written word. Written language requires translating in the mind first, before concepts and images can be understood. The harder the concept, the harder the mind has to work. Images travel straight into the mind and are virtually comprehended immediately, bypassing this translation process. That is why films are easy to watch even when tired.

The easiest, most basic, and least expensive method of filmmaking is putting images to voice-over, 'talking' about people doing things. The next stage in filmmaking is to interweave voice-over with action. The final stage of filmmaking is all action: where we are watching what is going on, not being told what is going on. Feature films are usually in this category, although there is a trend towards the easier method of voice-over. It is a lot harder to write in visuals, and it requires the screenwriter to do the processing work for the audience, not the other way around.

Having spent a lifetime making corporate videos where budget constraints force you to use 'voice-over' scripts, I cringe in my seat when I hear feature films resorting to this lower and lazy form of screenplay writing.
